When using EndNote in Word I get an error message "cannot edit range", what is that?

This is because you also have Mendeley installed. Sadly Mendeley and EndNote don't work together in Word. To work with EndNote you should disable the Mendeley word plugin by either uninstalling it (in Mendeley under tools). Or in Word using the File > Options > Add-ins > Manage templates > disable Mendeley
