How to create a link to an article?
How do I create a permanent link to an article that won't cause access issues when students are working outside the network?
Answer
Unfortunately, it is not allowed to post PDFs of articles or books on Brightspace of elsewhere. This is considered republication and in most cases violates copyright. The UMCG has had to pay high fines for this in the past.
So always link to articles, because that is always allowed!
To avoid error messages and access problems, it is important to follow these steps:
Step 1: Make it a permanent link
Create a link that will always work:
- With a DOI
It is best to use the DOI (Digital Object Identifier), most articles have that. You precede that DOI with: https://doi.org/. For example, this would be: https://doi.org/10.1111/eos.12290. You have now created a permanent link that will in principle always work.
- With a permalink
Some publishers offer a permalink, which you can also use.
Step 2: Turn that link into a proxy link
Why is a proxy link important?
With a proxy link, a student will not experience access problems at home. It works as follows: if you click on a proxy link outside the network and you are not yet logged in, a login screen will open. After you have logged in, you will go directly to the PDF. If you work within the network, you will not notice any difference.
How do you turn it into a proxy link?
Prefix the URL in the link with: https://proxy-ub.rug.nl/login?url=.
For example: https://proxy-ub.rug.nl/login?url=https://doi.org/10.1111/eos.12290.
Even easier: use the UG Link Generator. Simply paste the link in and a proxy link will automatically appear.
Step 3: Allow the link to open in a new window
Indicate in Brightspace that the link should be opened in a new window. This prevents error messages.
Step 4: Check your link!
Don't forget to try the link yourself.
No access to an article you would like to use?
It is of course possible that we do not have a specific e-book or e-journal in our collection. Contact the library via auteursrecht@umcg.nl and we will see what other options are available:
- Can we license the e-book or e-journal?
- Can we get permission from the rights holder to republish it?
- is the publication available open access?
